What began as a frightening trip to the doctor for one Utah family ended with an unexpected sense of relief after a mysterious lump inside a baby’s mouth turned out to be something far less serious than anyone imagined.
Rowan Steiner, a 30-year-old mother from Utah, was changing the diaper of her nine-month-old son, Max, when she noticed something unusual. As her baby cried, she caught sight of a strange blue lump attached to his gum. Alarmed by the discovery, she immediately took him to see doctors.
The medical team was puzzled from the start. According to Rowan, the doctors admitted they had never encountered anything quite like it before. Concerned about what they were seeing, they referred Max to both a pediatric dentist and an oral surgeon for further evaluation.
Even the specialists were unable to identify the mysterious lump. Because of its appearance, they feared it could be a vascular tumor and began preparing Max for a CT scan to investigate further.
Just before the scan was scheduled to begin, another doctor decided to take one more careful look. Rather than assuming it was a medical condition, the physician suggested the object might actually be something lodged inside the baby’s mouth.
Using a dental instrument, the doctor gently examined the edge of the lump. To everyone’s surprise, it suddenly popped off.
Instead of a tumor, the mysterious growth turned out to be a small piece of a fidget toy that had become tightly suctioned to Max’s gum.
Rowan later explained that the toy had attached itself so firmly that it looked like part of the tissue inside her son’s mouth.
“The head of the department used a dental pick and pried off the edge and it popped off,” she recalled. “It was super violent and there was blood underneath because it had sucked on to his gum so tightly.”
She added that the surrounding swelling had made the object even more difficult to identify.
“There was swelling around the edges to the point where people couldn’t see the edges of the toy. It was suctioned so tightly that it just wasn’t moving when people were touching it and feeling it.”
Throughout the day, several doctors had considered the possibility that the lump might be a foreign object. Rowan said she was open to that idea because she knows how curious babies can be.
“Throughout the day the doctors had mentioned it could be a toy. We were totally open to the idea because I have five children and a nine-month-old wants to put everything in their mouth at that stage.”
Even so, she never imagined it would be a piece from one of her older children’s fidget toys. The family had purchased the toy online, and she said discovering its true identity was the best outcome they could have hoped for after facing the possibility of a tumor.
Rowan explained that she, Max’s father, and several doctors had all examined the object without realizing what it was before the department head successfully removed it.
Looking back, she feels incredibly fortunate that the situation ended without serious consequences. Not only was the lump not a tumor, but Max also avoided choking on the small plastic piece.
The experience prompted Rowan to share an important safety reminder with other parents, especially those with infants and toddlers who naturally explore the world by putting objects in their mouths.
“Ultimately just be really careful, especially with younger kids,” she said. “I know the one that we bought was a cheaper brand from Amazon.”
She encouraged parents to regularly inspect toys for loose or detachable parts before allowing young children to play with them.
“I know there are some thicker, higher quality brands but definitely keep an eye out, make sure that they’re in one piece when they’re playing with it.”
Although the incident caused several hours of fear and uncertainty, it ultimately ended with relief and a valuable lesson about child safety. What initially appeared to be a frightening medical emergency was, fortunately, nothing more than a small toy that had become firmly attached inside a curious baby’s mouth.
