Jaye P. Morgan, the singer, actress and television personality best remembered for her memorable appearances on The Gong Show, has died at 94.
Morgan died August 24 of natural causes, according to her representatives. She had been living with her nephew and niece, Duke Morgan Spencer and Peggy Sue Spencer, in Longview, Washington. Her family will mourn privately, with no public memorial service planned.
A Career That Began Young
Born Mary Margaret Morgan in Mancos, Colorado, in 1931, Morgan began performing when she was just 3 years old as part of her family’s musical act.
She later built a successful singing career in the 1950s, recording songs including Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries and That’s All I Want from You. In 1954, she was named the year’s best female vocalist by DownBeat and Cash Box magazines.
Her television career quickly followed. She appeared on The Robert Q. Lewis Show, Stop the Music and eventually hosted The Jaye P. Morgan Show in 1956.
Morgan also became a familiar guest on programs such as The Tonight Show, The Jackie Gleason Show and The Merv Griffin Show.
Remembered for ‘The Gong Show’
For an entire generation of television viewers, Morgan became especially recognizable as a panelist on Chuck Barris’ wildly unpredictable The Gong Show.
Her run on the NBC series ended controversially in 1978 after she exposed her breasts during a performance by Gene Gene the Dancing Machine. NBC subsequently dismissed her from the show, turning the incident into one of the most talked-about moments of her television career.
Beyond television, Morgan appeared in films including The Gong Show Movie, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York and George Clooney’s Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.
Morgan was married three times and adopted a son, Paul Kane, with musician Art Kane.
She is survived by her nephew Duke Morgan Spencer and niece Peggy Sue Spencer.
