Kaylee Hottle, the deaf actress who won audiences over with her role as Jia in the Godzilla vs. Kong film series, has died following a car accident in Maryland. She was 18.
According to reports, Hottle was involved in a single-vehicle crash early Tuesday morning. Her father, Joshua Hottle, confirmed her passing in an emotional Facebook post shared in American Sign Language, expressing his heartbreak with the caption, “I am taking a flight that I never would like to take.”
The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office said deputies and emergency responders were called to the scene around 2:52 a.m. after a 1995 Honda Accord crashed in Ijamsville, Maryland. Investigators believe the vehicle left the roadway before striking a culvert. Authorities said excessive speed is believed to have contributed to the crash, although the investigation is still ongoing.
Hottle, who lived in Kyle, Texas, was one of two passengers in the vehicle. She was transported to a nearby trauma center, where she later died from her injuries. The second passenger was not hurt, while the 19-year-old driver was hospitalized with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Despite her young age, Hottle made a lasting impression in Hollywood. She made her feature film debut in 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong and returned in the 2024 sequel, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. She portrayed Jia, a deaf orphan from the hidden Iwi civilization on Skull Island who shares a remarkable bond with Kong through American Sign Language.
Her heartfelt performance brought emotional depth to the blockbuster franchise and earned praise from audiences around the world. The unique relationship between Jia and Kong became one of the films’ most memorable elements.
Before entering the film industry, Hottle appeared in a 2017 Mother’s Day commercial for the video relay service app Convo. That commercial caught the attention of filmmakers, who believed she perfectly matched the role of Jia.
In a 2024 interview, Hottle explained that she carefully studied each script while director Adam Wingard guided her through every scene. With support from her parents, who helped translate the script into American Sign Language, she was able to fully bring the character to life on screen.
Hottle attended the Texas School for the Deaf, which paid tribute to the young actress following news of her passing. The school shared a heartfelt message expressing sympathy for her family, friends, classmates, and everyone whose lives she touched.
Her co-stars and colleagues also remembered her talent and professionalism. During the promotion of Godzilla vs. Kong, actor Alexander Skarsgård praised Hottle for her natural screen presence and remarkable ability to take direction, saying she displayed confidence and emotional depth far beyond her years.
